Chapter Seven

Thursday

Shifting under the covers, she tried to find a comfortable position, but an unfamiliar soreness kept her from falling back to sleep. Not that she wanted to return to the strange dreams which plagued her all night. She tried to shake them off; it wasn’t as if she was a stranger to crazy dreams or anything, but they seemed too real. With the claiming ceremony still fresh in her mind, maybe it had provided the inspiration?

She remembered being in a cold cave, the entrance carved into the side of a mountain. Walking down a long, winding highway, leading to a deep cavern. Being told to lie down on a flat stone slab. Being tied down with leather belts by shrouded strangers—the faceless ones, she called them. She couldn't move. Could only lie there and watch as they tattooed her hand and arm. Never having had a tattoo in real life, she could only imagine it hurt. She felt no pain as they worked, only her usual sense of curiosity.

No, she could do without more sleep. There was much to think about, to write about. While Corgan slept, she could work on the book. With a groan, she glanced around the room and remembered she was stuck in his lair until he woke up. No laptop. Nothing to eat. What could she do now?

She threw her arms up. The stone walls parted. How did that happen? Corgan said only he could open the doors. Something must've changed her last night, also giving her the ability. What else could it be? She glanced over at Corgan. What should she do now? Leave the room, for one. Just in case opening the doors was a fluke. There was no need to take any chances.

Her footsteps amplified in the stairwell, the only sound in the quiet house. Where did Dee rest? She wasn't aware of any other cubby in the house. Maybe Corgan had one for guests? She scoffed at that thought. Vampires weren't exactly the entertaining type. Dee had probably returned “home” for the day. At the rate they could travel, distance didn't exactly matter.

She had the day to herself. Plenty of time to work. No worry of a day attack, at least, not when the enemy were creatures of the night. She hoped. Better the devil you knew, right?

A white bakery box of huge cinnamon buns sat on the kitchen counter, and she grabbed one on the way to the living room. She found her laptop where she had left it, sitting on the coffee table. Flipping it open, she propped her feet up and settled down on the settee, the place she now thought of as her writing spot.

She poised her fingers over the keyboard. “Ah!” She had a new tattoo on her hand. It was an intricate band on her ring finger, looking very much like a wedding band. A vine-like tattoo snaked up the inside of her arm. Her dream had been more than a mere dream. It could be worse.
